Infidelity site Ashley Madison hacked as attackers demand total shutdown
Possibly one of the biggest pieces of news to hit recently, I’m sure you’re all aware of the pro-affaire website Ashley Madison hack, which led to personal information of members being leaked. The hackers have called for the site to shut down, for good, or else they will realise all the data they have. Whilst a lot of people are focussing on whether or not promoting marital affairs are moral or not, the biggest issue seems to me is the fact that people’s names, addresses and card details were taken, and the security breach brings up a lot of questions. Will my details be at risk from that one time I bought a hentai manga online?
As for the morality of the site, I don’t have any real judgement against them. People do cheat, some very actively. Where there is a demand there will undoubtedly be a supply. As for the cheaters themselves, well no, I don’t agree with cheating, however I certainly don’t believe they deserved to have their personal security compromised.
The hackers claim that they disagree with Ashely Madison’s policy of deleting profile information should you wish to leave the site, charging people £15 for their information to be erased. It sounds a lot like blackmail, and even more worryingly, claims have been made that even if you do pay for this service, they don’t actually delete the information. It seems to be then, rather hypocritical for the hackers to then release the information of any members, if they’re so angry at the website for not respecting people’s privacy/security.
