You guys all have it. 57% have admitted to tasting their own. Here are 10 interesting facts about semen you probably didn’t know. Often called jizz, splooge, spunk, and my personal favourite nut butter, semen and sperm are a super important part of life and we should all celebrate it.

chart to show what semen is made up of

  1. Semen and sperm are two different things. It’s not an uncommon fact, but one people generally forget, since the two are used interchangeably. Sperm are the little tadpole like things that swim and make babies. Semen is the entire mixture that shoots out your penis, carrying the sperm.
  2. 99 percent of semen is a combination of ascorbic acid (Vitamin C), calcium, citric acid, enzymes, fructose sugar, phosphate and bicarbonate buffers, protein, water and zinc. Only 1% is actually sperm. Also, most sperm are dumb, and unable to swim well, about 80% sperm in an ejaculation will fail in the baby making mission before they even start.
  3. But you don’t have to worry, because even if 1% of the sperm you shoot are good swimmers, that’s still 1% of 150 million sperm a man normally produces in a day.
  4. Pre-cum doesn’t contain any sperm. But don’t use that as an excuse and make sure to wear a condom from the start!
  5. Eating semen isn’t really that beneficial to you. Whilst there are some proteins, it’s so little it doesn’t make much difference. Semen is mostly water, and like what has very few calories, so that’s a plus.
  6. Eating things does effect the taste of your sperm. Bitter sperm can be caused by coffee, smoking, smoking weed and alcohol. Red meat, dairy and chocolate can give it a sharp taste. Pineapple, celery and peppermint helps it taste more mild. Sweet semen is a sign you might be diabetic.
  7. People have made cookbooks that involve adding semen in as a recipe. Semen is one part of the body that isn’t considered cannibalism if you ingest it, which is a good thing, otherwise porn would have a lot of explaining to do. I’m more than happy to swallow, but I don’t think I’ll be using it as a cooking ingredient anytime soon.
  8. Semen does make your skin softer, and that crazy beauty guru that rubs it on her face isn’t completely wrong. You would however get better results with normal moisturising and using beauty masks.
  9. Sperm is the only cell in the human body that is produced to survive in a different body. If you think about it, that’s pretty weird. You’re making a bit of living thing, that is meant to leave you, go into someone else, and continue living.
  10. When semen is ejaculated, it’s first more like a gel than a liquid. It takes about 20 minutes for it to turn 100% into liquid. It’s also an alkaline, which helps protect the sperm from the acidic environment of the vagina.
