Today Theresa May, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom has called for a snap election. That means that on June 8th the UK will be voting on which party they want to govern the country. But what does Theresa May’s snap election mean for porn site users?

When Theresa May came out on Tuesday, no one was expecting her to all an early general election. It’s a complete 180 turn on her previous claims against it. The decision comes following the UK’s official withdrawal application from the European Union. Theresa May is currently spearheading the negotiations, but facing backlash in Parliament from opposition parties.

The Conservative Party, which Theresa May is the leader of, holds only a slim majority 330 seats in the 650-member House of Commons. Polls indicate strong support for the Conservative Party, and Theresa May is hoping to gain a bigger majority with the snap election. This will give her a stronger advantage in pushing for a “Hard Brexit“.

How does this affect us?

Brexit affects all UK based porn users in a very negative way. As we have reported, the UK has passed the Digital Economy Bill that will mean heavy censorship of adult sites. It goes against net neutrality, which should be a digital human right.

Net neutrality is protected by European Law. A Hard Brexit from the EU will mean the chances of our net neutrality being protected becomes impossibly slim. However the snap election means we can push for a government that will negotiate a Soft Brexit. In this case negotiations will work in favour of keeping human rights such as net neutrality, making it harder for the Digital Economy Bill to censor our online activities.

What do we do?

The only reason we don’t already have stricter online censorship is because of the fact Theresa May and the conservative party does not hold a high majority of control. The snap election gives them a chance to dominate Parliament. However it also gives other parties a chance to take back further seats from them.

As a UK citizen, you have the chance to vote for a party that commits to net neutrality. Many opposition parties are very much in favour of keeping net neutrality protected. We can protect our digital human rights. Theresa May wants to gain a higher majority in Parliament. We can put in MPs that will oppose her moves against net neutrality and censorship.
