On Friday morning, the universe lost one it’s most beloved science officers, Leonard Nimoy aged 83. On planet earth, he will be remembered as the actor who played one of sci-fi’s most defining characters, but also as a poet, a musician, a director, a photographer and a teacher.
Leonard Nimoy had been suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease for a year previous to his passing, but continued to pursue his passion for the arts. He lived his life doing what he loved, starting his acting career from the age of 8, he lived long and prospered.
President Obama has led the tribute to Leonard Nimoy, being a self-confessed trekkie himself. “Before being nerdy was cool, there was Leonard Nimoy.”
Mr Spock’s younger, alternative self in the Star Trek reboot, Zachary Quinto, wrote on instagram that his heart was broken. You can watch Leonard Nimoy’s last performance as Mr Spock in the film Star Trek: Into Darkness
Amongst other costars and fan tributes, NASA tweeted the quote “ Leonard Nimoy was an inspiration to multiple generations of engineers, scientists, astronauts…”
Fans world wide flocked to the online gaming community Star Trek Online to pay tribute to Mr Spock by visiting the fountain on planet Vulcan. Online community Reddit changed it’s avatar to that of Mr Spock. Flowers are left at Leonard Nemoy’s name plate on the walk of fame.
Finally, personally, I will say that Spock was always someone to look up to. As an actor, his role as Spock changed sci-fi. As a human being, he held the same prestige, but also kindness and compassion.
