Male fertility and infertility are often things we like to talk about here. That’s because, whether you’re interested in having kids at some point in your life or not, it’s important to understand what it means to keep yourself healthy. After all, that’s kind of critical.
For those who might be struggling with ways to stay fertile, a new study has some pretty cool information for you that can brighten up your day and, possibly, turn things around in the ol’ sperm game. That’s because, thanks to researcher from Rovira i Virgili University in Spain, guys who ate 60 grams of nuts everyday for 14 weeks saw an increase in sperm counts, as well as having healthier sperm.
To conduct the study, researchers selected 119 healthy guys between the ages of 18 and 35, randomly separating them into two different groups. The first kept their steady, Western-style-eating habits, while the second group added the aforementioned 60 grams of nuts like mixed almonds, hazelnuts and walnuts. After giving sperm and blood samples both before and after the 14-week study, the results showed that the men adding the nuts to their diets increased sperm count by an average of 16 percent.
In addition to the increased sperm count, these men also showed improvements in healthy sperm by 4 percent, with their sperm motility — which are the best swimming sperm and most likely to implant and fertilize and egg — increasing by 6 percent. So start eating those nuts, guys!
While the sample size was small — just 119 healthy men — Albert Salas-Huetos, the lead study author, believes the results are significant, saying he’s seeing growing evidence of how you eat impacting your ability to have children and stay fertile. He added this, via Men’s Health:
