We’ve been doing this Internet thing for a long time, and Selena Gomez has always been the most-followed person on Instagram. Seriously, it was like tax and death each year that annual rankings came out about that kind of stuff, with Selena always reigning supreme — until now.

With the singer and actress establishing herself as a force in the entertainment industry over the years, her social media presence reflected that, getting a perfect mix of younger fans with older fans and, of course, guys who just follow the former Disney star because she’s a total babe. Unfortunately, Selena Gomez’s spot atop the Instagram follower hierarchy comes to an end today, with the new top dog being none other than soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo.

That’s right, Instagram would much rather see the beefy, muscular legs of Cristiano than a sweet, pretty brunette like Selena. Bummer, right? It was probably bound to happen at some point, and, alas, today’s that day.

Given Cristiano Ronaldo’s move from Spanish soccer club, Real Madrid, to Italian power, Juventus, it’s unsurprising to see him snatch up new fans in a different region of Europe. Still, we’re pretty disappointed to hear the news today, ending Selena’s run at the top.

While the 26-year-old girl isn’t going away and will still (very much) be active on Instagram, we still find it necessary to showcase some of her hot Instagram pics, you know, to honor her holding the most-followed Instagram person for as long as she did. These are for you, Selena.

Selena Gomez’s two-year reign at the top was as impressive as those sexy pics of her above, but, alas, it’s no more — for the time being anyway. As of this morning, Cristiano Ronaldo’s Instagram following was at 144,352,910, with Selena’s at 144,325,743, so she’s trailing by a mere 26,000 or so. Something tells us she can climb out of that hole if she cares about the most-followed title.

We’re not here to crap all over Cristiano Ronaldo or anything — c’mon, the dude is insane at soccer — but if you want to help Selena Gomez just maybe overtake him and regain the title as most-followed person on Instagram, you might just want to give her a follow to see if she can inch above the soccer star. Given the fact Selena’s already got an insane 144.3 million followers, you probably already have her pop up on your feed, but, hey, it doesn’t hurt to ask, right?
