VR porn was supposed to be the next big thing in the industry, offering an interactive and unique experience for users to have sex with some of their favorite porn stars. The problem? Well, it never really took off the way that many thought it would. Can that change? One company thinks it can save the VR porn idea.

In our opinion, VR porn was a cool idea, but we’re seeing producers we know cut back on VR porn investment. It hasn’t really taken off. In fact, on Google Trends, it now gets the same number as searches as 3D porn. That’s where a sex tech company called Camasutra wants to come in and help revitalize it.

According to a recent article from Esquire on the topic of VR porn, Camasutra’s CEO, Adam Sutra, thinks the VR porn market is there, but needs a little help in presentation. Here’s what Sutra had to say in the Esquire piece:

“We’ve scanned a bunch of performers, and what we do after the scan is that they can train their own avatars. We measure how they stand, how they walk, how they talk. The more time someone spends with their avatar, the better it becomes.”

Essentially, the sex tech and VR company wants to give users more options, with more porn stars entering a users fantasy, and, in time, hoping that the two can “interact” with someone in their own life — like a girlfriend or someone else they’re close to, just as long as they can do a body scan of that person. This could be a serious game-changer.

Added Sutra: “People that you know quite well—you might want to scan them. You might want to have them immortalized. When they die, you might want to keep them around.”

Of course, the No. 1 question with all this new VR porn tech is simple: will users really want to use it? Thus far, recent history suggests otherwise, with people scoffing at the idea because of the logistics, equipment and cost. For example, users aren’t getting anything more than they could get watching a normal porn online or on TV, just an experience that is more interactive. When considering the cost, though, many of turned away from VR porn.

So, while companies like Camasutra want to help rejuvenate the VR porn industry, at least for now, we think that it’s definitely dead. Can it be revived? We’re not sure that now is the time. We think it failed for the same reasons that 3D failed, in general, as consumers didn’t want to sit wearing glasses while they watched TV. VR goggle’s are even more annoying to wear, and with both 3D and VR porn, you currently get a lower quality image. So, for now, VR porn is going nowhere — but we’ll see if it’s something that could be improved and users grow more receptive down the road.
