Just when you’ve thought you’re doing everything right in the bedroom during sex, the person in bed with you grabs their phone to check any missed calls or texts, or to watch Instagram stories. Think this is an uncommon occurrence? Think again, because it’s happening more than you might want to admit.
That’s right, fellas, your smartphone may be getting in the way of your sexual experience, as a study showed that more than one in three people admitted to answering their phones while getting busy, per TheJournal.ie.
According to researchers at Durham University, which studied a number of heterosexual couples to discover how smartphones were impacting their sex lives, phones went from being used to share sexy texts and photos to a major distraction. That’s because, when it’s left on and within arms reach during sex, people are actually using it before or during getting down and dirty.
“Participants felt that smartphones encroached onto sexual activity, with 40 percent admitting that they had delayed sex because of technology use,” commented Dr Mark McCorman, study leader.
Oh, but that’s not all, guys, because others in the study actually confessed to rushing through sex in order to reply to messages that came through during the experience. Does this seem really messed up to anyone else out there? It sure does to us!
The Durham University study also revealed that 10 percent of participants used their smartphone to participate an affair, with one woman in the study even describing her husband’s phone as “the other woman in our marriage.” It’s a sad truth, but cheating is often easiest with a cell phone, as people can set screen locks, message and call unsaved numbers and use an abundance of social-sharing apps like Snapchat to flirt. That’s not new, but it’s still sad.
Technology has helped relationships in many ways — like providing a variety of online dating apps for people with all sorts of personalities and interests — but things like smartphones have also increased distractions and caused people to become a bit more paranoid or even lose trust with a partner. When someone answers their phone during sex, that’s just one of the many ways.
For those 40 percent who feel it necessary to answer a phone call or reply to a text before or even during sex, shame on you. Sex is an emotional connection, and, whether doing it with someone you care about or just a one-night stand, it’s not difficult to give attention to that person for 20-30 minutes — so just put down the phone and have fun!
